In the face of an emergency, our first instinct is often to protect ourselves and our loved ones. But how often do we consider the safety of our four-legged family members?

According to a 2021 ASPCA study, over 20% of pet owners have been forced to evacuate their homes due to disasters. Shockingly, nearly half of these pet owners left at least one pet behind.

You may think, “I’d never leave my beloved pet behind!” However, the reality is that many people simply don’t have enough time to prepare when disaster strikes. In fact, nearly 30% of survey respondents cited not having enough time. This highlights the importance of proactive emergency planning.

September is National Preparedness Month, a nationwide initiative dedicated to helping individuals and families be ready for unexpected events. This year’s theme, “Start a Conversation,” encourages us to discuss emergency plans with loved ones, including our pets. Remember, if it’s not safe for you in your home, it’s not safe for them either!

When creating a family emergency plan, be sure to ask yourself:

  • Communication: How will we stay connected during a crisis? How will I get information from my local officials?
  • Evacuation: Where will we go and how will we transport our pets?
  • Medical Needs: How will we ensure access to medications and medical devices?
  • Valuables: How will we keep important documents, family mementos, and treasured possessions safe in case of an emergency?
  • Supplies: Do we have supplies prepared ahead of time? Will we need back-up power supplies? Is there enough food for all the pets?

Here are some additional tips when it comes to pet preparedness:

  • Ensure your pets are microchipped and wear collars with up-to-date identification
  • Identify a trusted neighbor, friend, or family member who can care for your pets if needed
  • Keep your pets’ vaccinations up-to-date and have a copy available
  • Research pet-friendly hotels or shelters in your area and outside your region
